Practice Consideration
Validity and Reliability of Nutrition Screening Tools
In 2010, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics published an evaluation of the validity and reliability of eleven nutrition-screening tools for use in acute and ambulatory care settings.(1)
» One was allocated a grading of I (Good): the NRS-2002(2)
» Five were rated as Grade II (Fair): MUST,(3) MST,(4) MNA-SF,(5) the Simple Two-Part Nutritional Screening Tool,(6) NST/BAPEN(7)
» Four were rated as Grade III (Limited): the NRS,(8) SCREEN II,(9) Rapid Screen,(9) Tool #1(10)
» One was rated Grade V (Grade not assignable): SNAQ(11)
In 2012 the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics evaluated screening tools specifically for patients with cancer.(12) They determined that the MST(4) was valid for both ambulatory and acute-care settings; and the MUST(3) and MSTC(13) were valid for acute-care settings only.(12)
