Practice Consideration
The Importance of Reviewing Patient/Client Information
It is necessary to determine whether the patient’s goals have been achieved during a review consultation before progressing to Step 2, Nutrition Diagnoses. Determining the success of previously-established parameters will guide you to better understand the patient’s requirements. For example, if the person has indicated a successful weight change with a weight loss of ½ lb (0.25 kg) per week over three months, the dietitian may consider the patient’s nutrition problem “overweight” as resolved providing the patient’s weight-loss goal has been reached. If on the other hand, the dietitian finds the patient has been unsuccessful in achieving the intended goal, it may mean that the problem is not resolved. In this instance, the dietitian may need to consider the reasons why the patient hasn’t met their goals and if there is any new information that may change the original PES Statements. Those PES statements that remain unresolved can be carried forward but may need to be modified as new information is acquired.
