One of the new features introduced in the cases in Nutrition Care Professionals the past year was a self assessment quiz (usually less than 10-15 questions). Students were asked to complete the questions to determine if they had the necessary backgound knowledge to complete the case. This was introduced to the students as follows:

Many practicing dietitians work as “generalists” in the outpatient clinic setting. They see a wide variety of clinical conditions as part of their schedule. The daily routine involves reviewing the appointment list (usually the afternoon before) to determine preparedness to provide care and to gather necessary educational materials. Please use this test as a means of practicing "getting prepared to provide care for a patient with cystic fibrosis". |
After they complete the self assessment they are provided with a "score" and an indication whether they are ready to begin the case or whether they need to go back and review content related to the questions that they missed. They are sent an email with a summary of their responses and what the correct respnse would have been.
Following is a summary of the areas where students most often needed additional reading for the three cases where the self assessments have been used. Only those questions where less than 80% chose the correct response are shown below. If you want to see the actual self assessment the titles are hyperlinked to the actual quiz.
