Practice Consideration
Nutrition Recommendations for Prostate Cancer and Radiation Therapy
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Evidence Analysis Library includes a systematic review project used to create the Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines for Oncology. The project addressed nutrition interventions for people undergoing pelvic radiation treatment for prostate and gynecological cancer. The authors concluded that there was limited evidence but it did support the consumption of soluble fiber. Patients taking one to two teaspoons of psyllium per day with an additional one to two glasses of water reduced the occurrence and severity of diarrhea caused by the radiation.(1)
