Practice Consideration
Assessments of People with Multiple Medical Conditions
- Many patients who are overweight also suffer from hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. For the patient who is overweight as well as hypertensive, the modifications for obesity and those specific to hypertension need to be addressed in the Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Diagnosis, Nutrition Intervention (including Nutrition Prescription as well as specific intervention goals) and Monitoring and Evaluation outcomes and indicator criterion.
- For people with diabetes mellitus or kidney problems, it is recommended that blood pressure be carefully monitored and managed at lower levels.
- The considerations for obesity and diabetes are addressed in other case studies. Items included address energy and carbohydrate content of food, energy-density of foods and the importance of a consistent eating pattern.
