Practice Consideration
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' 2020 eNCPT update included terms that reflect components of a goal called "Identify Nutrition Intervention Goal(s) (CG)" as well as terms for "Progress Evaluation (EV)" toward goals. Each have reference sheets within the eNCPT that provide additional explanations for the use of these terms.
The "Identify Nutrition Intervention Goal(s) (CG)" identifies the following goal component that can be specified: (1,2)
- Identify Goal Description (CG-1.1)
- Identify Goal Target Value (CG-1.2)
- Identify Goal Timeframe (CG-1.3)
- Identify Goal Subject (CG-1.4) (who will accomplish goal)
- Identify Goal Setter (CG-1.5)
Two of these components, Identify Goal Target Value (CG-1.2) and Identify Goal Timeframe (CG-1.3) will be included in the Monitoring and Evaluation plan along with other indicators from the Cascade of Outcomes.
To review the Cascade of Outcomes see Blog topic Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation.
The "Progress Evaluation (EV)" terms include: (1,3)
- New Goal Identified (EV-1.1)
- Goal Achieved (EV-1.2)
- Goal Discontinued (EV-1.3)
- Goal Not Achieved (EV-1.4)
- Some Progress Toward goal (EV-1.5)
- Some Digression Away From Goal (EV-1.6)
Goals can be broad overall treatment goals that might be stated in the Aims, Prescription and Goals activity, or they may be specific goals that are a result of a Nutrition Counseling Strategy based on goal setting that would occur in the activity Formulating Specific Behavioral-Change Targets. Below are examples of both types of goals.
AN AIM MIGHT BE:
To achieve a healthy dietary intake and physical activity level that will promote and attain a healthy weight.
The following goals might support this overall aim. The two different uses of goals are shown below.
